A scrapbook kept by Grace Howard Gray (1857-1949) to document family history and historic events, including mementos, drawings and ephemera collected during her lifetime. The scrapbook contains items related to the life of General O.O. Howard (1830-1909), Gray's father, and drawings by Guy Howard (1855-1899), her brother, and Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944). Additional materials were added to the scrapbook by other family members.

Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944) was a U.S. Army officer, lawyer, and author. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1874, he became an aide to General O.O. Grace Howard Gray (1857-1949), a daughter of General O.O. Howard (1830-1909), was born in Leeds, Maine. In 1875, she left her studies at Vassar College to join her parents at Vancouver, Washington Territory, where her father commanded the U.S. Army's Department of the Columbia. Served at Fort Whipple in 1878; joined company at Fort Apache in February 1879 and went to Camp Huachuca in March 1879 to command an Indian scout company.
